Education and Outreach

Giving back to the science and data community is important to me. Many of my collaborations have resulted in educational materials and outreach events aimed to engage a broad audience and support diversity and inclusion.

I created an Open Education Resource to teach undergraduate emerging scientists core data skills in the context of a project on an invasive aquatic plant. The resource is openly accessible and can be updated as I received feedback from the science education community.

I collaborated with artist Rhea Ewing and biodiversity science educators to develop an interactive educational module that highlights how individual scientists  bring their unique identities and skills to a collaborative research project. Students have the chance to learn lots of biology and data science concepts through the real-world story of an endangered ecosystem and species.

Representation is important for facilitating diversity, equity, and inclusion in science. I co-led a workshop for members of the LGBTQIA2+ community and allies to discuss how identity informs our work as biodiversity science professionals. We invited three speakers and six panelists across a range of backgrounds, career types, and career stages to engage with workshop participants. With support from the National Science Foundation, we were able to offer the workshop at a low cost and max out the number of participants in attendance.
